Correspondences I Have Known

Dear Amelia

Well, here it is, as promised: Correspondences I Have Known.  Incidentally, I am a fan of my scanner.  But you probably already guessed this?

1. Home of the Mai Tai

My parents used to travel a bit when I was growing up.  Mom sent postcards from their hotels, including this one (Well, hello there, LA).  Note schooner in forefront of pic.

I just realized she mentions multiple trips.  Maybe they traveled by that schooner to get to LA.

2. Don't Be Cruel

Around third grade, I went to church camp and found myself a boyfriend.  He was one heck of a writer.

If you're wondering what is on the back of the letter, obscuring his insights on the front, it's just some Elvis lyrics.

3. Valentines

Later, I went to camp again.  (I really just wanted to include a pretty envelope, like yours.)

Mom sent a couple of cards that week, but this one steals my heart. It features our old dog, Bitsy, who lived to be a thousand years old, as well as a killer closing.

(Speaking of killing, I will probably get in big trouble for featuring this innocent, sweet writing on the internet.  This may be the last day of my life I receive a letter from my mother.)

4. With Obscurity, From Cairo

Then, someone went to Egypt.  If you know who that was, Traveler, please identify yourself!  This postcard has haunted me for the past three years, ever since I found it in a box of high school letters when cleaning out my closet in my parents' home.  I have no idea who sent it, but since I am married to someone named Tim, and he kind of signs his name like that, and has, shall we say, a bit of a postcarding problem, this missive from Egypt feels like a weird sign from the future, planted in my past, discovered in my present - and it makes me feel funny!  But also curious, and delighted.

5. Bears are cute

I just thought you should see this.  I found this at my parents' house too, the same night I went through my old drawings in the attic with Mom, who declared: Look at your use of color!  I had to agree with her - little Kandinsky that I was.

That's it!  Thanks for touring the globe with me.  Have a big ole happy holiday weekend!

Kara! Don't be cruel, indeed!

There's so much to love here. Your mom's handwriting? Fantastic. I cannot believe that your Tim did not send you that postcard. And that you cannot remember which Tim did!

And yes, bears are cute.

I want to say more, but as you very well know, I have to go water the rhododendrons.

All my love,
Amerzzz

p.s. I want to do a response: Correspondences I Have Known. OK?
