Kara, do you remember that book I sent you with the seemingly provocative / mostly embarrassing title, Schopenhauer's Porcupines: Intimacy and its Dilemmas? Well, I had bought myself a copy as well and it surfaced during the recent move. So, I picked it up and began reading. Who knew but it's actually really interesting. Here's a passage I just had to share:
"What, we may well ask, is [stress]? No one has ever seen it, few can define it accurately, but we all
know when we have it...
The word 'stress' derives from the Latin strictus meaning 'compressed.' Etymologically, then, stress
has to do with too little room and a need to spread out.
This etymology puts me in mind of Winnicott's notion of potential space—that intermediate area
between the subjective and objective in which creativity and play occur."
I read this passage after having stared longingly at a friend of mine's photos. It all seemed to belong together, so I thought I'd bring everything to you.

Above photos by Adam Hoff I just went to sign this post, "Playfully, Amelia." But I just can't do it! What about this? Grisly, Amelia Amelia, Oh, I love this! Big crush on Adam Hoff. His work, I mean. Although one sort of necessitates the other, no? Adam = Work. Or Adam + Work = Crush. All these equations could work on a Friday, no? That definition of stress is so incredible - and I have been thinking about this topic all day. Specifically, I've been contemplating the body's response to stress, how we feel like something is very very wrong when we are stressed. How, in essence, our life cannot properly move forward when we experience this sort of internal environment daily. The solution? According to Adam, more airplane rides! And more walks - in the woods, under the trees, hopping along the dusty lane. Lovingly - er, I mean, Golden, Kara |
