Sooo, to catch people up. You sent me a link to the following Cheryl Strayed talk, which YES is technically a "Super Soul Session":

And I keep thinking about it. Specifically this idea of surrendering to my own mediocrity. There are sooooo many ways I need to do this / applications for this idea in my life. As a parent. As a woman who wants to fit into her old clothes but who has carried two babies. As a wife who wants to have a delicious and interesting dinner ready by 6:30pm. As a house-owner who wants the house to be clean, oh so clean. As a writer whose only time to write is during her 4-month-old's naps, which is also the time I sometimes need in order to shower, brush my teeth, eat food, prepare food, exercise, distract myself on the Internet. As a blogger. As a yoga practitioner. Etc. Etc.
Somewhat relatedly, at least in terms of being a person in the world trying to deal with what life hands you, I discovered the podcast The Longest Shortest Time and am now in love with Trystan and John/Bif. Please listen to their story so we can talk about it! (I'm currently on Part 3 of 4.)
Lastly, I feel really bad for the coffee-loving mom who heeds the below advice. Coffee is a TRUE joy in my life. And pumping and dumping after drinking it? No effing way.

i know this isn't an entry about lactation but I have to comment...i agree with you---never pump and dump for coffee!!! advice like you read in that book will only serve to make you feel like you aren't doing it right and undermines the whole mothering experience.
ReplyDeleteif you are concerned that your baby is more wakeful after you've had caffeine, you can pump and store that milk (label it as coffee milk!) then offer it for a feed when the baby is about to be awake for a longer period. the same principle is true for when you've been drinking alcohol. if you're concerned about how much you have had to drink, just pump and freeze it in smaller quantities, maybe an ounce or two, (be sure to label it) and then mix it in with non-alcohol laden milk so it would not be as concentrated. also, if you've frozen it you can wait to offer it until you baby is older and can metabolize it a bit better.
i hope there is nothing mediocre about this lactation advice!
hahaha thanks for chiming in, Amanda. Not mediocre at all, ALTHOUGH it wouldn't be a bad thing if it were. :) Your advice sounds like a great idea, ALTHOUGH I can only bring myself to the dreaded pump when I've out and out missed a feeding or am feeling uncomfortable/engorged.
DeleteHi, Mare flair here. Ooops. I must have missed/blocked out this advice. I drink like 3 cups of coffee a day and nurse with abandon. Nothing, NOTHING, could make me give up coffee. Nothing.
